Getting started with your MZ-800 Starter Pack

I have prepared each Starter Pack in two forms, so you can use whichever setup you have in front of you. Open the MZF or MZT files in an emulator, or play the WAV version through a cassette adapter in the MZ-800's built-in tape deck. Both options give you access to the same selection of software.

New to the MZ-800? The emulator is the easiest place to begin. Loading a WAV file on the real machine takes a few more steps, but I have included those below as well.

Download the WAV version when you want to use the original machine. Put a cassette adapter in the built-in deck and play the WAV from a phone, computer, tablet, or audio player through an audio cable or Bluetooth adapter.

The emulator I recommend

For these Starter Packs, I recommend the open-source MZ-800 Emulator shown below. It is a practical place to start, while other compatible Sharp MZ-800 emulators may work as well.

MZ-800 Emulator

This is the emulator I suggest when you want to explore the archive without setting up the real machine first. It supports Sharp MZ cassette formats including MZF, MZT, TAP, and WAV. For a Starter Pack, open the MZF or MZT file through its cassette or CMT controls.

The emulator is a separate open-source project. I link to its main project page and its SourceForge release archive instead of one particular installer, so this guide should remain useful when a newer version appears.

Using the MZF or MZT pack

You do not need to copy the exact emulator screen shown on this page. Menu names can move between versions; the important part is finding the cassette, CMT, or tape-loading controls.

Extract the ZIP

Download the emulator version and extract the ZIP. Leave the MZF or MZT files together with the README so the notes are easy to find.

Start the emulator

Open the emulator and select the Sharp MZ-800 if it offers a choice of different MZ machines.

Find the tape controls

Look for a control called cassette, CMT, tape, attach, insert, or load. The name may differ, but it should let you choose a tape-image file.

Open MZF or MZT

Choose the MZF or MZT file from the pack. Depending on the emulator settings, it may load quickly or behave like a virtual cassette.

Use the README

Check the README if the program does not start by itself. It may need IPL, FD BASIC, a particular machine mode, or an extra command.

Some files will start straight away; others will not. Seeing IPL or needing FD BASIC is not necessarily a problem. The README should tell you what is known about that particular program.

What you may see in the emulator

These are all normal screens. A program may start immediately, stop at the Sharp IPL, or first need FD BASIC before you can continue.

This is a normal starting screen. Check the README to see whether the file should load directly or needs another step.

Some software expects FD BASIC first. When I know that this is required, I include it in the pack's notes.

This is the result you are looking for: the game or program running. Some titles reach this screen immediately; others need a command first.

Loading a WAV file on the real MZ-800

The MZ-800 already has its cassette deck built in. With a cassette adapter, you can feed the archived WAV signal into that deck from a modern phone, computer, tablet, or audio player.

Extract the WAV pack

Download the real-hardware version and extract the ZIP. Keep the WAV file and its README together.

Insert the adapter

Put the cassette adapter into the MZ-800's built-in deck in the same way you would insert a normal tape.

Connect the audio

Plug the adapter into your playback device, or pair the Bluetooth version using the instructions supplied with the adapter.

Prepare the MZ-800

Set the MZ-800 to the mode described in the README and enter the listed loading command if one is needed.

Play the complete WAV

Start the WAV from the beginning at a moderate volume. Keep notifications and other sounds out of the way, then let the complete file play.

There is no one volume setting that works for everyone. Phones, computers, Bluetooth adapters, and wired cassette adapters all produce different levels. If the load fails, start the WAV again and change the volume only a little at a time. Turn off notifications, equalisation, fades, spatial audio, and other sound processing where possible.

Your adapter or playback device does not have to look exactly the same. The basic idea remains the same: playback device → cassette adapter → the MZ-800's internal tape deck.

If it does not load the first time

Do not assume the file is unusable straight away. The problem may be the selected format, machine mode, loading command, emulator setting, cassette adapter, or audio level. The checks below cover the most common causes.

Worth checking
Load error in a Sharp MZ-800 emulator
The emulator does not recognise the file
Check that the MZ-800 machine is selected and that you opened the file through the emulator's cassette, CMT, tape, attach, or load function rather than as a floppy disk.
The file loads but the program does not start
Open the README and look for IPL, FD BASIC, machine-mode, boot, or run instructions. Not every file is self-starting.
The MZ-800 does not detect the WAV signal
Make sure the adapter is seated properly, restart the WAV from the beginning, and change the volume in small steps. Turn off notifications and sound processing.
Loading begins but ends with an error
Try a slightly higher or lower level and use the WAV exactly as supplied. A message tone, Bluetooth interruption, fade, or audio enhancement can spoil the cassette signal.
The result may be an archive problem
This is a personal archive, and some files still need testing. Note the filename, format, setup, error message, and what you tried, then send the result through the verification page. A failed test is still genuinely useful.

This is a personal amateur archive

I preserve material that can be rare, incomplete, poorly documented, or not yet tested on every setup. That is why I would rather show a genuine load error than make every file look perfectly verified. A screenshot, a failed hardware load, or a compatibility note helps me improve the README files and gives the next visitor a more honest idea of what to expect.

A successful load is great, but a failed load can be just as useful. Please include the filename, MZF/MZT/WAV format, emulator version or hardware setup, loading method, and any screenshot, photograph, command, or error message that may help me reproduce the result.
